Face it, we live in a cold, wet environment here in Fairbanks, Alaska. It is a harsh environment for carpets. They get messed up from tracking in snow and mud, which eventually can cause mold. It seems easier to have hardwood floors with easy to clean throw rugs instead....right? Here at Fairbanks Cleanpro, our speciality is cleaning carpets, but we also know something about hardwood floors. Here are a few tips on keeping your hardwood floors in top condition.

Dust & Suck

On a regular basis, dust your hardwood floor with a slightly damp sponge mop or you can use a Swiffer with the disposable electrostatic cloth. Don't forget to flip the cloth over and use the other side before disposing of it to save you some money. For cleaning once or twice a week use a vacuum with the wide, flat floor attachment for sucking up those squirrely dust bunnies, dirt, and pet hair. Do not use a vacuum with the beater bar rolling! This will mar up the finish on your hardwood floor.

The Build-Up

Damp mopping and dusting doesn't always get up the heavier, stickier grime that can build up over time. Doing a deeper cleaning in the spring or just before the winter holidays will give your floor a nice, clean shine. Use a citrus type wood-cleaning product diluted with water. Soak a sponge or microfiber rag mop in the cleaning solution and wring it out until it is only slightly damp. Mop the floor being careful not to leave standing water. If you have one, turn on a ceiling or oscillating fan to speed up drying time.

Scuffs, Marks, and Stains

What type of finish does your hardwood floor have? It makes a difference on how you go about cleaning scuffs, marks and stains. If your floor has a hard finish such as urethane, the mark or stain should be pretty easy to remove with a soft, clean cloth. Never use sandpaper, steel wool, or harsh chemicals on this type of surface because they can permanently damage the finish. However, if your floor has a soft, oiled finish, the mark or stain could have penetrated down to the wood grain. Unlike a hard finish, you can use steel wool on this type of finish. Rub the spot with # 000 steel wool and floor wax until the mark is gone. If needed, stain the wood matching the rest of the floor and then wax and buff the spot to a nice, even shine.
