How to Avoid Dirt Stains in Your Carpet

If dirt stains are a common issue in your carpet, there are ways you can help reduce the occurrence of dirt in your home. If you have a dirt stain that needs to be dealt with, the solution can be quite simple. Fairbanks Cleanpro in Fairbanks North Star Borough can help you take care of both of these issues with these simple tips.

How to Keep Dirt Out of Your Home

The best way to avoid having dirt get in your carpet is by not allowing it to enter your home. While small amounts of dirt inside are inevitable, there are ways you can reduce the amount in your home.

Use Doormats

Doormats create a barrier between the outdoors and the inside of your home. Place doormats inside and outside of every entryway in order to catch dirt before it has a chance to get inside. Because the primary function of your doormats is to trap grime trying to sneak into your home, it's important that you also keep your mats clean. Vacuum your doormats regularly, making sure to take care of both sides for the most effective clean.

Clean Off Your Pets

If you have pets living in your home, you are most likely already aware of the amount of dirt they can track into the house. It's unlikely that your furry friends are concerned about taking dirt inside, so it's up to you to keep it at bay. Before you allow your pet inside or near your carpets, give them a good cleaning. Keep a towel by the door that you can use to clean off their paws and wipe down their coat. Don't forget to brush your pet's coat outdoors to reduce the amount of hair they leave in your carpeting.

Close the Windows

You don't have to keep your windows closed all the time, but reducing the amount of time they're open can help stop dirt from getting inside. Enjoy warm spring days with your windows open, but consider keeping them closed on extra breezy days. When the winds pick up, they are more likely to push dirt and other particles into your home.

Use Indoor Shoes

Having a set of indoor shoes can really help keep dirt away from your carpeting. Keep a shoe rack by your home's entryways where you can leave your dirty outdoor shoes and change into a clean pair of indoor shoes. You don't have to force your guests to do the same, practicing this with your family is enough to reduce the amount of dirt caused stains in your carpet.

Empty Your Vacuum Outdoors

If you're obsessed with keeping your carpet clean, you know just how important vacuuming is. However, the way you empty your vacuum is just as important. Whether you have a bagless vacuum or one with a bag, empty your vacuum or change its bag before it gets full. The trick to emptying your vacuum or changing the bag is doing it outdoors. By doing it indoors, you run the risk of allowing dirt and other particles to fly back into your carpet. How to Remove Dirt Stains From Your Carpet

Dirt stains can be fairly easy to remove with simple ingredients and a bit of elbow grease. To remove a dirt stain from your carpet, follow these steps:
  1. Remove dry dirt. If you notice dirt on your carpet, start by removing as much of it as possible. Grab your vacuum and slowly pass over the area several times to remove the dirt on the surface.
  2. Create a cleaning solution. Once you remove the dirt on the surface, if you notice a stain on your carpet, you will need to treat it right away. Create a cleaning solution using 1/4 teaspoon of mild liquid dish soap and 1 cup of warm water. Grab a couple of clean washcloths and you're ready to go.
  3. Treat the stain. Gently dab the cleaning solution onto the stain working from the outside toward the center. Don't soak the stain, just dab enough of the solution onto to it so that it's wet. Use a dry washcloth to blot the area and remove the moisture along with the staining agent.
  4. Rinse the area. Once the stain has been removed, rinse the area with a bit of cold water. Blot the area with a dry washcloth to remove excess moisture and help the spot dry faster.
  5. Allow the area to dry. As you wait for the area to air dry, do not allow foot traffic over the wet spot. Walking over a moist spot in your carpet can cause more staining to occur.
